Mark William Sommerfield Design is a collaborative designer. I work with my customers to provide a service and ultimately a cohesive product; a beautiful and liveable home. I work all over the country, including Hawaii and specialize in more detail oriented projects.
There was so much product on the market and that has changed, I have my own manufacturing facility so
Mark William Sommerfield Design also manufactures custom furniture, custom draperies, custom uphosltery, pillows, cabinets, finishes, lamps, and even front doors! (For our customers only.)
I am a professional designer, so no matter what your taste or style, I will research and develop a design that suits your needs and your needs in the future. Have a look at photos of interiors, these are real client jobs and not staged vignettes (notice the lack of flowers and coffee table books).
I work well with people with allergies, green design and construction, green remodeling and green architects. I have a bevy of resources for a custom home and interior. I like constraints and challenges, that is why you need an interior designer.
I have a Civil Engineering degree and an MBA, so I understand construction, budgets and deadlines.

Interior Design
Interior design or Décor is a profession concerned with anything that is found inside a space - walls, windows, doors, finishes, textures, light, furnishings and furniture. All of these elements are used by interior designers to develop a functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing space for a building's user.
The work of an interior designer draws upon many disciplines including environmental psychology, architecture, product design, and traditional decoration (aesthetics and cosmetics). They plan the spaces of almost every type of building including: hotels, corporate spaces, schools, hospitals, private residences, shopping malls, restaurants, theaters, and airport terminals. Today, interior designers must be attuned to architectural detailing including floor plans, home renovations, and construction codes. Some interior designers are architects as well. |

Not to be confused with interior decoration, interior design, which evolved from interior decoration, involves a multitude of technical, analytical and creative skills. There is a wide range of disciplines within the "career" of interior design. Domestically the profession of interior design encompasses those designers who may specialize in residential or commercial interior design. Within residential design one can specialize in kitchen and bathroom design, universal design, design for the aged, multifamily housing amongst others. Other interior designers may dwell in the commercial or contract realm of interior space design. In addition to the above commercial interior designers may specialize in furniture design, healthcare design, hospitality design, retail design, workspace design, sustainability, and if they are a registered architect they can focus on the interior architecture of a space. It is the intent of the professional interior designer to improve the psychological and/or physiological well being of their clients. The professional interior designer achieves this by understanding their clients needs, seeking appropriate solutions that respect their clients social, physical and psychological needs and applying them in a safe and ecologically sensitive manner that promotes the health, safety and welfare of the clients.

Environmental psychology is an interdisciplinary field focused on the interplay between humans and their surroundings. The field defines the term environment broadly encompassing natural environments, social settings, built environments, learning environments, and informational environments. When solving problems involving human-environment interactions, whether global or local, one must have a model of human nature that predicts the environmental conditions under which humans will behave in a decent and creative manner. With such a model one can design, manage, protect and/or restore environments that enhance reasonable behavior, predict what the likely outcome will be when these conditions are not met, and diagnose problem situations. The field develops such a model of human nature while retaining a broad and inherently multidisciplinary focus. It explores such dissimilar issues as common property resource management, wayfinding in complex settings, the effect of environmental stress on human performance, the characteristics of restorative environments, human information processing, and the promotion of durable conservation behavior. Although "environmental psychology" is arguably the best-known and most comprehensive description of the field, it is also known as human factors science, cognitive ergonomics, environmental social sciences, architectural psychology, socio-architecture, ecological psychology, ecopsychology, behavioral geography, environment-behavior studies, person-environment studies, environmental sociology, social ecology, and environmental design research.
